Chapter 3 Notes

Question: On page 53 Curley goes into the bunkhouse and ask for his wife and if they've seen Slim. Did Curley assume Slim was with his wife ? Is he afraid that Slim can take his wife ?

Prediction: I predict that Curley will have a new found respect for Lennie. Due to the fact that, Lennie proved himself to be a psychically strong guy, by hurting Curley to the floor. Curley underestimated Lennie and now he knows Lennie can cause harm.

Reflect: On page 63 Curley finally decides to attack Lennie. Instead of reacting quickly he, looked at George and asked him to get him off. This is a sign to me that Lennie does depend on George and without him he could be loss, hurt and lonely etc.

Chapter 2 Notes

Prediction: I think that in the chapters to come Lennie will forget two of the things George told him. Judging on the way Lennie was looking at Curley's wife I think Lennie will begin to bother her. Lennie forgets things constantly even after being reminded so much. I predict that will be Curley's breaking point with Lennie and want to fight him, causing problems with their job situation.

Question: If both Lennie and George don't like the place they are working at, why don't they find a different place ? They can earn a little money somewhere else as well.

Summarize: George and Lennie finally reached the Bunkhouse and they were greeted and shown their beds, while waiting for the boss. When the boss finally came and semi-interviewed them, George did all the talking for both him and Lennie. They met Curley; the bosses'  son and Curley did not like Lennie, George warned him that Curley was going to bother him but to avoid him for the sake of the job.

Chapter 1 Notes

Question; If Lennie didn't have George and vice versa, where would they be ? And what would they be doing? With who?

Reflect; On Page 9 the author states "George's hand remained outstretched imperiously. Slowly, like a terrier who doesn't wan to bring a ball to its master.." This part made me feel a certain type of way because they are comparing an actual human to an animal. Only because he is mentally handicapped ?

Prediction; I predict that Lennie and George will find the ranch at the end of the chapter they are left camping out in the woods taking a break from walking so much. They will find the ranch and the book will continue from their tribulations at the job that they will get.

Picturing the History Behind Of Mice and Men

For a moment the place was lifeless, and then two men emerged from the path and came into the opening by the green pool.
They had walked in single file down the path, and even in the open one stayed behind the other. Both were dressed in denim trousers and in denim coats with brass buttons. The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. His arms did not swing at his sides, but hung loosely.

The first man stopped short in the clearing, and the follower nearly ran over him. He took off his hat and wiped the sweat-band with his forefinger and snapped the moisture off. His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself. (1.2-4)

Sound familiar? Kind of like the pictures, right? In writing, compare and contrast this opening section from Of Mice and Men to the pictures you analyzed in class. What does the text and the photographs show us about the 1930s?  Be specific!

After reading the paragraph the first picture that comes to mind is Highway 84. Only because the way the author decides to describe the men. In my mind i picture those men working a hard job that they dont deserve. During the time period of the 1930s the economy was at an all time bad. Jobs were difficult to find during this time. The people in the book could have came a across a highway such as Highway 84.

Desperately needing a job they must have taken any job it was for the money. After such misery of job during this time period they must have been working hard just to keep living. Because nothing was easy mostly with such an economic downfall. And maybe the only way men could find some type of job was through signs like the one found on Highway 84.

On Highway 84, outskirts of Eloy, Pinal County, Arizona. Highway signs reading “cotton pickers wanted”...
